Week 29: Asking for prayer, not just offering
QUESTION
When you’re facing something challenging, troubling, or important, is it easy or hard for you to promptly ask your core friends to pray about it?
STORY
A guy heard his friend’s offer, “Let me know how I can pray for you.” He almost gave his typically deflective, “I’m good.” But this time he paused and answered honestly: “Well, actually, I’m pretty stressed about work and haven’t been feeling any peace.” That simple admission changed the moment to sincere connection. His friend prayed for God’s help right then. Suddenly, he felt seen, supported, and less alone. A bond between friends deepened. Asking for prayer opened a door that staying quiet would have kept shut.
EXAMINE SELF
Why do I hesitate to ask for prayer from trusted friends?
Certain topics? Shame? Pride? Fear? Not wanting to burden a friend?
What’s a real concern that I need prayer for now?
SCRIPTURE & INSIGHT
“Share each other’s burdens; it’s the way to obey the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2
“Confess your sins (and struggles) to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” — James 5:16
Prayer is something you give others and something you receive. Asking for prayer is the opposite of weakness. It’s courage and honesty. It’s doing what God wants us to do. It’s letting a brother help carry what you weren’t meant to carry alone.
QUOTE
“Asking for prayer is a simple way to step out of isolation and into true friendship.” — Jeff Kemp
TIP
When you ask a friend to pray for you, you’re actually honoring him and definitely helping yourself.
PRAYER, CONFESS, REPENT
Father, I confess that I often try to handle things on my own. I stay quiet instead of asking for help. Forgive my pride and self-protection. Teach me to trust You enough to ask a friend to pray for me. Help me share my burdens with a team approach.
COACHING
Friendship grows when we take small, honest steps. A key step is asking for prayer before things blow up. Keep it simple and ask your trusted friend: “Would you pray for me about this?” No speech. Just be real. We grow stronger when we stop pretending we’re fine and start letting brothers pray with us.
ACTION STEP
Ask your core friend(s) this week: “Can you pray for me about something?” Then give him one raw need.
COMMITMENT
I’m not gonna only ask how I can pray for friends.. I’m gonna ask for prayer regularly.
HABIT
Weekly, send a gut-level prayer request to a trusted friend, instead of carrying it alone.
TALK & PRAY WITH FRIENDS
Ask your friend(s): “How can I best pray for you—and would you pray for me?”
Then pray a “Man Prayer” for each other. “Man Prayer” is tongue-in-cheek and helpful! It’s immediate and brief so both guys are comfortable, even in public. Don’t guess what to pray. Just pray a sentence like, “God, do Your will, what’s best, in my friend’s situation and life.”
