Week 10: Every Guy Won’t Do a Peter
WARNING
Peter quickly went all in with Jesus…until he burned Jesus 3 times in one crucial night.
QUESTION
How do you know who’s a trustworthy friend—and who God wants you to pursue?
STORY
Jake tried to go deep with most guys he met—but often got burned or let down. One day, his mentor said, “Jesus had the crowd, the 12, and His 3. Be prayerful and discerning, not rash or desperate.” Jake slowed down and started praying before pursuing. That shift helped him avoid frustration as he focused on a couple core friendships, building trust and spiritual alignment.
EXAMINE SELF
Do you rush into closeness too fast… or stay cautiously guarded too long, without first praying about who God is calling you to build trust with?
SCRIPTURE
“The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but he who has insight draws them out.” — Proverbs 20:5
QUOTE
“Trust means trust God first. When He prompts, invest to build and agree to trust” — Jeff Kemp
TIP
Look for consistency, humility, and a hunger for God in potential core friends, not just affinity or shared interests.
PRAY, CONFESS & REPENT
Father, too often I either rush in…or keep my guard up in self-protective fear, without talking to You. Forgive my self-led patterns in friendship. Help me be prayerful like Jesus was in choosing His friends. Lead me with wisdom to pursue trusting friendships.
COACHING
Not every man is meant to be in your inner circle. Jesus was friendly to the crowd, called 12 “friends”, and had 3 who were closest, His core of Peter, James and John. Let God guide you on who to trust and huddle with.
ACTION STEP
Pray and ask God to highlight one friend this week to pursue intentionally. Invest time sharing backgrounds and stories from your lives. Pay attention to his openness, vulnerability and responses to your story and questions.
COMMITMENT
I’ll pursue deeper connection with a spiritually trusted friend this week. We’ll talk about trusting each other and pray for God’s best in our friendship.
HABIT
After conversations and time with your closest friends or guys group, ask yourself and God: Who am I trusting or holding back from? Who sharpens me and who am I sharpening?
TALK & PRAY WITH FRIENDS
Ask a close friend: “What helps you know a friend is trustworthy enough to go deep?” Then pray for each other to grow wise, discerning, and consistent in your core friendships.
