Week 14: Build Trust with Truth and Honor
QUESTION
Do your closest friendships feel solid and safe? Is there respect, trust and truth?
STORY
My college freshman football coach led with a front of bold confidence, but zero connection with us players. We hated our experience. We didn’t trust or respect him. We lost all but one game and he was fired.
A business division manager led a team with a confident front, but little connection. However, he actually listened and discerned that his team didn’t feel respected. After some humbling conversations, and even an apology, he began practicing honor—listening better, telling the truth kindly, building trust as he learned about his direct reports. They eventually became a tight team.
The change? Humility eliminated distance. Loyalty and teamwork grew.
EXAMINE SELF
Do I build or erode trust with my words and actions?
SCRIPTURE
“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” — Romans 12:10
QUOTE
“Honor opens hearts. Truth cements trust.” – Jeff Kemp
TIP
Ask: “Do men feel respected after they’ve been with me, especially my friends?”
PRAY,CONFESS & REPENT
Jesus, I confess being careless and not intentional with my words and attitude with my friends. Give me Jesus’ power to honor my friends with respect, appreciation and truth. I want to build trust with integrity.
COACHING
Grow trust by being consistent in little things. Stay in touch. Ask questions. Listen more. Speak life, not fluff. Affirm before correcting. Appreciate more than criticize.
ACTION STEP
Do something to deepen trust with a friend this week. Make an apology. Follow up on a promise. Honor him with a compliment or a thank you. Get together and show interest by listening well and sharing honestly with him.
DIAGRAM

COMMITMENT
This week I will initiate having honoring or truth-giving conversations weekly with a core friend.
HABIT
Ask yourself: “Was I easy to trust today by honoring my spouse, kids and friends today in my words and actions?”
TALK & PRAY WITH FRIENDS
Discuss with a friend ways each of us want to improve – Being easy to trust, trusting, showing honor, or sharing honesty and truth?
