Week 15: Back to the Foundation
QUESTION
What’s your de-facto foundation of your life, the source for your identity, who you are and how you live? Is it Jesus and 100% God’s grace? If not, what is it?
STORY
A performance-driven guy became a Christian right after college and brought most of his old performance operating system with him. For years he led groups, quoted Scripture, and tried to mentor younger guys. But stress, fatigue, and hidden sin exposed cracks underneath. His foundation was duty more than grace, performing more than responding to God.
He was weary and doubting himself. So, he stepped back for a couple months to re-center on grace – the actual gospel of Jesus. He focused on being present with God and honest confession. He re-received the good news of Jesus – rescued, forgiven and adopted by grace by faith alone, and following Jesus by the same grace. God’s power, not his effort.
Before long, he was ready to re-engage. This time responding, not performing. Lighter. Freer. More real.
DIAGRAM
4 Gifts of the Father: Ask yourself, “0-10, how much have I received each of these 4 gifts the Father gave Jesus, and which He and Jesus now give me?”

EXAMINE SELF
Is the gospel fresh and active in my daily life? Have I fallen into trying to satisfy God or gotten stuck living my own way, in my own effort?
SCRIPTURE
“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.” — Psalm 127:1
(self-study: Proverbs 16:3, James 4:13–15, Matthew 6:33, 7:24–27, John 5:17-19, 15:1–8)
QUOTE
“Don’t outgrow the gospel of Jesus who substituted Himself as sacrifice for our sin. We receive salvation, sonship, and His power to live. Grow deeper into grace and continual receiving.” – Jeff Kemp
TIP
Re-center each day around the good news: grace received, not performance earned.
PRAY,CONFESS & REPENT
Jesus, I confess I’ve drifted into self-effort instead of gospel rest. I turn from my effort to Your achievement and grace to me. Bring me back to the truth that it’s all You—not me.
COACHING
Rechecking your foundation isn’t weakness—it’s wisdom. Don’t build without Jesus at the center.
ACTION STEP
Read the Gospel of John several times over the next two weeks—slowly and reflectively. Ask the Father what He’s saying to you in John 5:17-19, 15:1–8, Matthew 6:33, 7:24–27, Proverbs 16:3, & James 4:13–15. Write it down.
COMMITMENT
I will start each morning by sitting for 3 minutes with Father God to receive, remember and be re-centered in the proactive grace, forgiveness, and sacrifice of Jesus. (see Romans 5:8)
HABIT
Add “Gospel Reminder” or “Re-receive Good News” to your morning routine, digital calendar or journaling.
TALK & PRAY WITH FRIENDS
How much impact in my life, and yours, does the good news of Jesus actually have? Is His saving and adopting me anchoring my identity and influencing how I live day-to-day?
