Fear has devastating effects on our lives. It affects our memory, brain processing and our mental and physical health. More importantly, it keeps us from living in the faith and power of God. Everyone deals with fear. I know I have, whether it was the fear of a linebacker coming off the blindside, or the fear of my mess being known to others or the fear of not measuring up and losing the approval of others. As humans, we’re imperfect, so we’ll never fully live without fear. But the Bible reveals God’s assurances and tells us how to rely on Him to triumph over fear.

Here are three big ways the Bible teaches us to address fear.

Finding Peace in God’s Promises

God’s Word is filled with promises of His care and faithfulness. He gives us peace in moments of fear. As Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

God isn’t just waiting around, watching us in heaven. He’s with us. His presence is constant, even in difficult times when it feels like He’s far off. Just remembering this fact can help calm our fears and steady us through challenges and spiritual battles. God’s not just there, either, He’s actively guiding us. “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me,” Psalm 23:4 reminds us. “Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” The rod and the staff refer to God shepherding us: a rod to defend us from danger and a staff to guide us to better things.

Meditating on verses like these can help you find peace from fear. When I’m faced with uncertainty, I like to come to God, open and listening, letting Him direct me to the verses that He knows I need to let resonate within me. His presence and the Bible’s wisdom give me assurances. Sometimes, my friends offer advice and reminders about God’s character—reach out to your friends in difficult times. A good friend will listen and reassure you of God’s promises.

Overcoming fear through faith

Jesus calls us to live by faith and not by sight. When we experience moments of fear, it’s a reminder to put our faith in God even more. Remember when Jesus questioned His disciples’ fear during the storm on the boat, asking “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” He’s telling them, If you’re my follower and you believe that I am God, then why would you worry about a storm? That applies to us, too, of course. If we believe that God controls everything, then why should we be afraid?

But by building faith through prayer, studying His Word and reflecting on His past faithfulness, we can let God transform our fear into confidence in Him.

Trusting God in uncertain times

Fear is often amplified by uncertainty, whether it’s about the future, health, finances or relationships. But the Bible calls believers to trust God even when they cannot see the outcome. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Matthew 6:34 adds practical wisdom: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” By focusing on God’s daily provision rather than future concerns, believers can release the burden of fear and rest in His care.

The Bible addresses our fear with powerful truths about God’s nature. God promises to be with us, giving us peace. On the other hand, He reminds us to let our faith and trust in Him overcome fear and alleviate our anxiety in uncertain times. Give your fear to the all-powerful, loving God, so He can transform them into steadfast faith and confidence.
